what’s hot, who’s hot……was started in April this year! We have realised that you are all early adopters and are up for trying something new as long as there is a pretty good chance it might be worthwhile.
We took a chance on the tiny suburban Afghan restaurant Parwana and reviewed it before the normal three month non–review period and everyone flocked there to try it and, by all accounts have continued to flock there. Despite our success SO FAR, PLEASE understand that a restaurant, bakery, coffee shop or hotel in it’s very first weeks of operation will frequently have teething problem, so be a little kind!
left, a real newbie Red Door Bakery
22 Elizabeth Street, Croydon South Australia 5008 t +61 8 8340 0306
open Wednesday to Sunday 8.00pm till 4.00pm
The Red Door Bakery is situated just two doors down from the Queen Street Café and is a tiny little rag tag bakery where food items can be eaten in or taken away. Some of the product lacks finesse, but their meat pie made with real butter puff made on the premises is tremendous and their croissants are also excellent. They do sell coffee but we haven’t tried it yet. Clearly they are still dealing with being immediately busy, so if you want to buy anything in quantity it might be a good idea to order a couple of days in advance.
added 18 May, 2010 — since first trying the Red Door Bakery meat pie and croissant we have tried their vegetarian lentil pie and found it not to be quite the same excellent standard, but then we’re not vegetarians!
right, new only to me (how could that happen?) Muratti Cakes & Gateaux
114B prospect Road, Prospect South Australia 5082 t+61 8 8344 9977
e admin@muratti.com.au w www.muratti.com.au open Monday to Friday 8.00am till 5.00pm, Saturdays 8.00am till 1.30pm and closed Sundays
Vanilla slices and coffee eclairs are my secret addiction and one that has been easily controlled in Adelaide because in my head I always compare to Fauchon in Paris and nothing even came close……until now that is! True you don’t get the exquisite packaging of Fauchon, but the price is miniscule by comparison and the quality for my favourites the vanilla slice and coffee eclair are very similar. Too many cake bakers and sellers in Adelaide keep their product way too cold and way too long.
Beautiful puff pastry, it’s layers hard pressed to a crispy flaky intrusion between a properly cooked vanilla patisserie cream without a hint of nasty floury back palate because it hasn't been cooked out long enough. The eclairs are soft and light and not fridge cold with just the right subtle coffee taste and no cloying sweetness. The sandwich on good dark rye was the best I have had in Adelaide for years because they quality of the bread matched the quality and quantity of the filling.
Muratti is situated in a refreshingly ungentrified Prospect Road and stepping inside is to be seduced by the sweet smells of a a real patisserie. It is the aroma memory of the konditor in the tiny village of Troffaich in Austria, the old Zonar’s in Athens were in 96 we would go to drink decent coffee, oggle and flirt with their shamelessly playful waiters and stuff ourselves with dozens of tiny coffee eclairs. And Paris’ Fauchon where the price of a Napoleon meant it almost had to be saved up for, but the package, almost as good to look at as the Napoleon was to eat made us feel miraculously French as we window shopped outside Chanel and Cartier.
……but Mr Muratti what’s the chance of your vanilla slice with a thin vanilla fondant icing instead of an icing sugar dust? That would really be heaven!
