editor’s note

There is a lot gong on We are heading back for Shanghai in April with
sauchin 2011 a very hot South Australian food, wine and tourism promotion at David Laris’ fabulous new venue Sinan Mansion. Olivia Stratton’s Cellar Door Festival last weekend was an enormous success. There is still time to buy tickets on–line and have a chance of winning Berryl. The whole event is a great opportunity to try South Australian wines without having to drive to get there and attend educational and fun classes click on Beryl (right) to go to the information.

The very exciting news for Galaxy Guides is that Champagne expert Kaaren Palmer will join Galaxy Guides as Champagne editor with an entirely new section from th main navigation about Champagne. Where to drink, in other words restaurants and bars that open serious classic vintages and sell by the glass or restaurants with hard to find bottles or just great value. There will also be education and information and to celebrate in Adelaide we will be kicking it off with a great fun event…on Sunday April 3, so stay tuned!

Thanks to a very generous gift for my birthday I have just been in Syndey reviewing a marvellous bunch. Spice Temple, Marque, Yoshi and Tetsuya all of whom will be reviewed in detail in a couple of weeks when we revamp and expand our Syndey recommendations. The Annie Leibovitz exhibition at the MCA is stunning and the inclusion of some of her personal photohraphs add a touching insight into her personal life. The show is on until April 26 for details CLICK HERE

I am pretty old and have had an interest in wine for a very long time but cannot remember a wierder vintage in South Australia or for that matter Australia. The consoling thing is that out of difficult vintages often come spectacular and unexpected wines, but right at this moment our thoughts are with anyone in the Australian grape industry or for that matter any type of agricultural industry.

what’s hot, who’s hot……Sinan Mansion Shanghai

David Laris has a genius for restaurant style and it is rare to find a chef turned designer and the practical but stunning concepts he creates a combination of seeing how kitchens and restaurant floors work over years of cooking at the highest level. new Adelaide reviews

the Lion hotel a new menu, excellent service and a great wine list CLICK HERE

We’ve been out and about a lot and have first time reviews in the coming weeks for Amalfi where nothing has changed in 30 years. 30 years on, they are still dishing up generous old–fashioned Italian food in a noisy buslting atmosphere that is deliberately not conducive to hanging around. The other Panacea a small innercity restaurant with excellent coffee and free–wire.

GF Cafe

A little rumble tumble GF Cafe is doing a roaring trade and we have tried a number of the sweet items and particularly like the macaroons of the old fashioned kind. The good thing is the Mel and Zed from Addis Abbaba are now serving Sabine de Vuono, chef at CF Cafés desserts.

Just across Port Road is Queen Street is a thriving rag tag café environment our favourites Queen Street Café which we think does Adelaide’s best breakfast and the croissants at the red Door Bakery just get better and better.

this week’s recipes

Chestnut mushrooms
Hard to believe, but a mushroom we haven’t seen before, not even in China were the variety is dazzling. The Chestnut mushroom has a firm texture and we like it set against the silken texture of Oyster muchrooms. A couple of very simple and really KIS KIF recipes that take just minuted to put together.
