FOOD Pier One is a spectacular venue where absolutely no expense has been spared right down to their temperature controlled wine storage that is a feature of the room. Despite the amazing environment the food at Pier One was extremely disappointing and because it was more expensive than anywhere else the failure to deliver good food made the price seem unreasonable. Overworked and not particularly well done the food came with that ritualistic and horribly dreary explanation that is so annoying. Usually by the time the waiter has finished explaining what you already know, the food is cold.
Three of us, all ordering something different, all well traveled and food and wine lovers, not one of us was pleased with our food and it cost a good deal more than a superlative dining experience at Jean Georges.
They have a brilliant wine and spirit list and we do not want to totally dismiss the experience of Pier One. Sometimes in Shanghai is can take a long while for a restaurant to settle down and until we hear from local contacts that this is the case, it will be drinks at Pier One and perhaps a supper which is much less pretentious.
