FOOD The Grand Hyatt Shanghai is a superbly maintained property and whilst it houses many restaurants and bars there are two that we particularly enjoy both their food and their ambience. Club Jin Mao is really fabulous serving succession of really wonderful Shanghainese food.
The dining experience is vastly enhanced for many diners because key staff speak several languages and their menu is written in English and Chinese. The latter is really not a great deal of help unless you are familiar with Shanghainese cuisine. Choosing a menu from one of their three master chefs is an excellent option or you can get the staff to order for you indicating of course just how adventurous a diner you might be.
Not everyone one has the sense of adventure for a Duck tongue cold starter but it was the start of an amazing meal. The Shark fin soup with truffle the richness held back with the final addition of red vinegar was velvety and textural and utterly delectable. It may come as a surprise to some to know that truffles are found as widely in China as they are in Iraq, France and Italy. What they lack in really intense flavour is made up for by the generosity of the portion. The simplicity of the Steamed fresh water shrimp served with yet another vinegar was tremendous and followed by a succession of different dumplings each with a different sauce. Each one was different, utterly different, some encases in soft fluffy white dumpling dough, others in flaky fall–apart pastry, others in slimy slippery transparent wrappers. About twelve types they were all fantastic. The Fried braised silken tofu was simply extraordinary and a dish we have been attempting to replicate for months.
The ubiquitous fresh fruit at the end of every meal in China can be a bit of a let down for a dessert lover, but here it was certainly showy perfectly cut and swathed in a cloud of dry ice smoke. Luckily there was also some sweet dumplings, and especial favourite the Green pea scroll that came served on a mulberry leaf.
Club Jin Mao is on the pricey side, but in most restaurants it is not easy to taste so many different dishes when you are just one or two people. The dining experience is also greatly enhanced by the courteous staff who guide the dining experience.

WINE Club Jin Mao also enjoys an extensive wine list and offers the opportunity to try a range of teas as well.

CLOUD 9
Drinks and snacks at their Cloud 9 bar (literally in the clouds) located on the 87th floor are also highly recommended. A 360° view of Shanghai the bar is open Monday to Thursday and Sunday 6.00 pm till 1.00 am, Friday and Saturday until 2.00 am.

We have eaten at other restaurants in the Grand Hyatt Shanghai but Club Jin Mao and Cloud 9 are our only recommendations.
