DANGEROUS TASTES
The story of spices
Andrew Dalby
Published by British Museum Press H/B $60.95 P/B $35.95
This book is not new, but has been a bible for travelling in strange lands, the spice markets of Greece, Egypt, Malaysia, China and Jordan and it was the book that recently solved another riddle; camphor. A subtle taste impossible to identify served in Ganeesh’s favourite dessert that turned out to be camphor.
The tastes are not so much dangerous as fascinating, and the book whilst erudite is an easy read because the subject matter has been so well researched with a smattering of fascinating anecdotes.
