book reviews

It might have been the weirdest summer ever and possibly the most complicated vintage on record in South Australia, but for the home gardener regular rain througout the year have left gardens looking better than they have done for years and now with spring we are all out in out gardens enjoying the first sunshine in months!
All of the books below are available in South Australia from
The Conservatory Garden and Hom, Unley, South Australia.

pick PRESERVE serve
Enjoying local and home–grown produce year–round
Chris Fortune
Published by David Bateman, deluxe paperback $30.00

You have to give it to those New Zealanders they are great gardeners and chef Chris Fortune has been at the forefront of the Marlborough Farmers’ Market. A great little book for anyone who is in to growing their own and loves cooking. Excellent information about drying, salting, smoking and pickling written in a straightforward manner that gets straight to the nitty gritty and offers good advice on storage and handling. Fortune is clearly a good teacher and the sections explaining preserving methods give a very good foundation for all types of preserving.

Garden Design Handbook
Paul Bangay
Photographs by Simon Griffiths
Published by LANTERN an imprint of PENGUIN BOOKS, H/B $69.95

Paul Bangay is one of Australia’s highest profile landscape designers and in constant demand in Australia and overseas. This new book in encyclopedic and really intended to deliver the promise of its title the “Garden Design Handbook” and is incredibly well–priced at $69.95 Bangay shows the look and then sets about succinctly explaining how to achieve the look by accurately documenting the most important aspects of the design and building. Water features, walls, paths for tiny to massive gardens this is a brilliant book that for all its beauty may end up being tattered and torn from being so well used.
We like this book a lot!

Autumn in Piemonte
Food and Travels in Italy’s Northwest
Manuela Darling–Gansser
Photography by Simon Griffiths
Published by Hardie Grant Books, deluxe paperback $45

What a life photographer Simon Griffiths leads but there is clearly a reason why he is so in demand he just seems to get food and wine and culture and gardens and delivers such delicious insights one feels like jumping on the net and buying a ticket.
To my delight this is not just another thrown together cookbook after someone has spent two weeks in a village but a culmination of a lifetime of Northern Italian culture and cooking. Darling–Gasser has managed against all odds to include less well–known recipes such as Dolce di san Giuseppe p109 and the Torte alli nicciole e ciocholato Amaro p134. Both are complex but rewarding and whilst she does not shy away from technique sitting alongside complex traditional cook she places the simple cooking that is to go to the garden pick what sis ready and go and make something simple, but wonderful with it. This book is a bargain at $45.

So French
A lifetime in the Provencal French Kitchen
Dany Chouet with Trish Hobbs
Published by Murdoch Books, H/B $69.95

Don’t be confused this is a book written about French provincal cooking in Australia. Dany Chouet made her name as chef at the Australian Blue Mountains country house Cleopatra at Blackheath where she reigned supreme from 1984 until 1986. This wonderful book is a memoir as much as it is a cookbook and it is possible to often wish that books like this came with the simple spiral bound recipe book of the old Time life series where one could take great care of the precious books and work the simple recipe book until it was splattered with food, pages stuck together, totally loved and totally adored.
A good read as well as a reminder of just how much food has changed even in 30 years in Australia, but particularly a reminder that it has been immigration that has so changed the face of Australian food. The homesickness for an ingredient that could not be found that has fundamentally changed Australian cooking into the miracle of abundance it is today.
I love this book and I especially love it because there are not tortured plate presentations; the food is in many ways old–fashioned but you just know with the focus on the garden and the producers, everything, but everything will tastes wonderful!
