FOOD This funky little pub is a refreshing change from the stainless steel, brown timber cream and grey/mustard/plum interiors that have become a blueprint for all the flashy new pub renovations. It has to be said most of them are charging restaurant prices and failing to deliver on all aspects. Food, service and wine lists frequently leave one wishing we had spent the extra $10 dollars and eaten at one of our favourite restaurants. Most of them are very poor value for money.
The Colonist Tavern does not pretend to be something it is not and
the décor has a touch of whimsy to ’slightly sick’ heavily leaning on Gustav Klimt, Andy Warhol and other famous art world figures that give the place a mixed (not confused) and slightly grungy feel. Their tiny dining room is intimate and cute, swathed in Klimt’s The Lovers it has a very French feel, but in the hot weather we like the openness of the bar area with it’s
high Laminex tables and comfortable padded stools. Food is real
pub grub, generously portioned and cheap with snacks on their all day menu ranging from just $5 for Fried whitebait and a bowl of chips for just $6. The sandwiches Classic BLT ($9.90) and the Col Aussie Lamb Burger ($12.00) are a meal in themselves. From their mains, salads ($5.00) and Fish and Chips ($12.90) are real value for money, however it must be said their pizzas need some serious work and are neither good, or value for money. Saturday and Sunday breakfast encompasses all of the usual breakfast offerings and boasts free-range eggs, pancakes and Bloody Marys. The Colonist Tavern is a great addition to The Parade and is bound to become the locals local.
WINE Hurrah a great small wine list with vintages listed and prices that are encouragement to have a bottle rather than a glass, especially of you are a local who has walked there. A generous range of wines by the glass the most expensive the 06 Teusner Joshua Grenache Shiraz Mouvedre (Barossa Valley) $8.50 and their house wines start at $3.50 a glass and they have NV Jansz (Tasmania) by the glass for just $7.00. What we love most is you can buy a bottle of NV Moet and Chandon (France) for just $84.00, which is an absolute steal.
