FOOD From the outset it must be said that Adelaide has had rare glimpses of really great Thai food and the only truly memorable Thai food was served at the long closed Botanic Dining Room’s Friday Thai Table. The excellence and authenticity of that table remains unmatched by any Adelaide establishment before or since. This is not to criticize the Star of Siam unduly, but merely to ensure that the diner does not have expectations that would be unfulfilled. Their menu encompasses all of the standard Thai dishes that are common to Australian Thai restaurants. Their Miang Pla ($11.80 for 6 pieces) is very good and at most best shared between two people, in fact it is so good, you may want the entire dish yourself. It is delicious with crispy snapper, lemon grass, spring onion and coriander held together with a spicy lime juice dressing and served on betel leaves with a crushed cashew garnish. Another dish chosen from the specials was Salt and pepper soft shell crab $11.80. The lack of seasoning and absence of sauce and bite of chilli was initially disappointing, but the crab was sweet and succulent, had been fried in clean oil and nothing marred the sweet crab taste. A wedge of lime would have made the dish complete and next time we’ll ask for it. The Kao Pad Prik, basically Thai fried rice, had none of the promised chilli bite and was somewhat disappointing, however a nearby table had ordered Phad Thai Seafood and it looked terrific. Each ingredient was clearly defined and there was a generous amount of seafood. The Star if Siam in not ground breaking in any way but of all of the Adelaide Thai restaurants we have tried we like it the best and it is the only one we have found thus far worthy of review.
Always busy reservations are recommended. AO

WINE the Star of Siam has a wine list is devoid of vintages but not of interest and is way beyond the average Asian restaurant, even to the point of boasting a French Champagne.
