FOOD Formerly Margherita’s Café, The Café is ragtag to say the least. Menus aren’t too clean, nor are the windows and really nothing is different except that the lovely comfy stylish chairs are gone with Rita Sindicic and of course her cooking. The Café is even a bit more pared back. How cheap is it just to scrape Margherita’s from the window? Pretty cheap!
Our Eggs Benedict didn’t come on the promised muffins, but two huge thick pieces of bread that weren’t even toasted and the Hollandaise, well we’re going to give them our recipe because it was just a runny eggy, crappy flat drizzle. But, the eggs were perfectly poached and tasted like they had come from some Greek yaya’s back yard around the corner and laid about five seconds ago. The coffee, short espressos were so good that we had a second. So until they get the Hollandaise right, because Rita’s was always perfect, we’ll be having poached eggs on toast with bacon and be happy as the proverbial pig in…………!
We’re sick of high tech interiors that are so predictably faux Italian you often wonder if you’re in a different restaurant. If you the idea of being able to read the paper in peace and quiet, even rest your aching legs on a pouf without anyone sneering at your lack of decorum could just be The Café will suit you.
In addition to the standard breakfast items they do a range of ’melts’, focaccias, baguettes and light meals including a burger. Parking is easy on the street and more at the back where they have a rough and tumble outside area.
