FOOD Sometimes deviating from your normal choices in a restaurant can lead to bitter disappointment. Crispy Hianese style rice was ordered expecting crunchy crisp fried rice but instead it came in a mound no different to the people at the next table who had ordered the Vegetarian BBQ rice. In fact the crispy rice was unpleasantly mushy and soggy. The other complication was a mound of raw naked mushrooms that are a personal abhorrence. The crumbed and fried gluten is an acquired taste and not one this food writer is really interesting in acquiring. Some Chinese vegetarian is a bit weird. They spend a lot of time making vegetarian foods that look like meat or fish and taste like rubber when their tofu, vegetable, noodle/rice combinations are generally far more delicious. If you’re looking for a clean, quick and healthy vegetarian lunch stay with Old style noodle soup or in summer Thea’s cold noodles and to be fair the main reason for going there is the sweet Pandan lotus buns, which are divine!
