FOOD Ever driven through the main street of Port
Elliot at around 12.30 pm on a Sunday and wondered what the queue was
all about? It’s about the best pastie in the state, maybe even
Australia. The right amount of veg, the right amount of meat and most
importantly the right amount of pepper encased in scrumptious puff
paste, lovingly made on the premises.
They make lots of different treats, from conventional pies with a rich meaty sauce to cottage pies, sausage rolls and much more. Then there are the cakes. Berliners bursting with raspberry jam and coated with thick glossy vanilla, chocolate or pink icing, or sugar crusted Kitchener buns, oozing fresh cream and raspberry jam.
The bakery has been in continuous operation for over 100 years, and although they are no longer used, the original wood-fired ovens remain in place.
To drive past the Port Elliott Bakery, and not to have the patience
to queue for a pasty is to miss out on one of South Australia’s great
culinary treats.
