FOOD Lucia’s is an institution loved by Adelaideans for it’s sincerity, longevity and most importantly it’s generosity. Owned and run by one of the most famous and oldest market families, Lucia’s Pizzeria & Spaghetti Bar was opened in 1975 by Lucia and Pasqualle Rosella and the business continues to be run by their daughters Nicci Bugeja and Maria Rosella. Nicci’s husband John and their three children are also deeply entrenched in market life with Stall 69, Ripe and Lucia’s Fine Foods immediately next to the pizza bar. Old–style Italian food, prepared with love. Generosity, freshness and seasonality are the basis of the cooking at Lucia’s. Order anything, their food it utterly consistent and reliable, and before you complain that it is a little slow, remember that the food is made to order. The Tuna salad with ricotta is a steal; they make a great breakfast, and adding their wonderful white beans in tomato sauce (their own) and spinach makes it one of Adelaide’s best breakfasts. Their Spaghetti Bolognese is the benchmark and pizzas are terrific. Lucia’s has one of the best cake selections in Adelaide, choosing not to buy from a single supplier, but from those people who may make one, perhaps two things very well. To name just three; Lemon tarts are very yummy, Greek honey cakes spectacular and Zeffie’s orange cake sublime and they also make several really good items themselves. Anna’s Rice Cake, their friandes are wonderful and made fresh daily and their Persian chef Karesh has started making some scrumptious Rose perfumed macaroons. Thursday and Friday their chefs always make a special, which changes each week and is driven but ingredients in season. There is something lovely about seeing Maria and Nicci working in Lucia’s because to sustain enthusiasm is such a charged and busy work environment for so many years is very unusual and a good lesson for those chefs and other industry individuals who claim to be burned out after just a few years. The girls and boys at Lucia’s put the love in and it shows. Remarkably nothing on their menu is over $20, so their food is not just delicious but extraordinarily good value for money. Coffee is a tradition and one of the best and most consistent in Adelaide.

WINE Like their cake selection their wine list is small but select, with really good inexpensive wines from their winemaker friends and customers. Wines are available by the bottle and glass and of course in true Italian tradition there are aperitivos and Lucia’s favourite medicine, the Italian saffron liqueur Strega.
