FOOD This tatty restaurant is the favourite of Chinese students and chefs alike for their tasty and authentic cheap Chinese food. Service is fast, even on Fridays when they sometimes have a queue and it is not the sort of place where you hang around. In fact there is no encouragement whatsoever to linger. Favourites are any of their roast dishes, duck and other soups and the Bean curd and vegetables with rice is also very good. One of the reasons they are so busy on Fridays is their sucking pig. Fatty, meaty and crunchy it is not to everyone’s liking and as a ’round-eye’ you need to make clear you like the fatty bits or they will especially pick out the lean parts for you. Roast duck and other roasts meats are just one of their specialties and portions are very generous. At Hong Fat there is very little of the unauthentic, battered deep–frying that plagues Adelaide’s most popular Chinese restaurants. This is not court cooking but with a price range from as little as $6 all of their food is extremely good value for money, generous and flavoursome. If you have Chinese guests or especially if you are trying to make Chinese students feel at home this is a very good place to take them. AO
