FOOD This dim sum was pronounced excellent by our Shanghainese guest. The duck got a rave review, but to my amusement Lily groaned at my love of chicken feet, especially their cold chicken feet and Stewed ox tripe. ’Disgusting!’ a view shared by so many young main land Chinese who have not grown up, like their parents and grandparents, with hunger in their bellies. Disgusting or not they were very good, as was the radish cake and steamed sticky rice. The steamed buns at Ding Hao also got the thumbs up. Pronounced bau-t-z (said quickly) the pork buns were almost as good as our favourite in Shanghai with a soft fluffy dough and moist sweet/savoury pork filling.
Our only complaint, no egg custard tarts, you know the flaky pastry kind that seem to have vanished from Adelaide Chinese menus. Regardless they have an extensive selection of Chinese sweets that were also very good. The food at Ding Hao is very inexpensive (we paid $34 for two) without alcohol. On Sundays bookings are essential, especially for the first sitting at 11.00 am. We waited for their opening with a big queue and had to negotiate to eat quickly to get a table without a booking. AO
