FOOD Some days you have to wonder why you even try looking for new places to eat. A newish African restaurant with a welcome so chilling we decided not to stay. A run along the beach looking for something simple and admittedly not too expensive to be assailed with fryer oil smells that were decidedly rank and in another a filthy menu boasting mains at $30 plus. Disgruntled and disgusted we headed back for the Adelaide Central Market, which is, a haven for good cheap eats, that best of all are served up without attitude and in most instances genuine friendliness.
The Chinatown Café is a personal favourite and always utterly reliable. It is not the sort of place were you sit and linger because their miniscule price demands as many sittings as they can possible squeeze through. The café has long been a favourite with Adelaide’s chef enjoy their simple authentic, ChineseÓinfluenced,
Malaysian. Favorites are Chicken curry with rice, a light Malaysian chicken curry with meat cooked on the bone and accompanied by a generous portion of steamed rice. Dry wanton noodle, thin noodles, with vinegar soy and vegetables, accompanied by clear broth with prawn dumplings is also very good.
Their Hainanese chicken is very popular, but you need to ask
for thigh meat, to ensure your don’t get the breast meat most round-eye prefer. This is not round-eye Asian
Chinese food; their Laksa is one of Adelaide’s best and we can safely
recommend anything on their menu, especially noodle dishes like Singapore noodles and Kway Teow. AO
WINE Unlicensed.
