WINE Over 40 years owner and sommelier Nick Papazahariakis has built up an enviable cellar with a comprehensive range from Australia’s top producers including Penfolds, Henschke, Rockford, Wolf Blass, Lindemans and Seppelt. Many classic wines including Henschke Hill of Grace, Wolf Blass Black Label, Rockford Basket Press, and Penfolds Grange (26 vintages dating back to 1961) are offered in multiple vintages, including magnums.
Those looking for modestly priced wines are catered for with excellent choices that begin with prices of around $35. Additionally wine selection is made all the more enjoyable because Nick Papazahariakis is always on hand with suggestions that may not be listed. Our most recent visit with his assistance we had three very good bottles of wine, none of which broke the bank. We started with an utterly delicious 2004 Josemeyer Riesling $55, then the complex and perfectly balanced 2001 Richard Hamilton Burton’s Grenache Shiraz $85 and finished with a 98 Rymill Coonawarra June Traminer $45. Exciting to find such a terrific selection of wines, even at the modest end of the spectrum, that are not current vintage. Wines by the glass are offered in the European tradition with mine host opening bottles on a daily basis, a custom that we love because so often the sommelier opens bottles they have in mind to drink themselves.
Even though the cost of some bottles extends into the hundreds of dollars, these special wines represent excellent value considering their age. Aficionados will be overjoyed to discover rare Australian wines such as 1972 Seppelt Great Western Sparkling Burgundy and 1971 Wynns Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. Such is the extent of choice that not all the treasures appear on the wine list, so ask for a tour of the cellar if you are curious. You will even find some French classics from Burgundy and Bordeaux with 20 years of bottle age. Later in the evening choose from the Adelaide’s best range of Portuguese Vintage Ports and Australian fortified wines, about 70 wines in all with examples dating back to 1920.
The wine list at Chloe’s Restaurant remains South Australia’s best and it is very important to remember that wines at Chloe’s are cellared properly unlike so many other restaurants boasting good selections of Australian and imported wines. Proper cellaring is the key to the longevity of wines and we despair at seeing fantastic wines sitting out in a hot restaurant environment. At Chloe’s one has the opportunity to drink an old wine cellared in perfect condition and a much better chance of seeing a great wine in the perfect bloom of advanced age; such a treat! AB
